A Growth Mindset - From Business Made Simple by Donald Miller
I’m currently reading Business Made Simple by Donald Miller, which is a book comprised of 60 short entries designed to make you a better leader, marketer, and businessperson.
Miller describes the ideal employee as a “value-driven professional.” This is someone who can lead, who understands how a business works, and who can make their branch profitable.
The entry I read today stated that value-driven professionals have a growth mindset. This means that they don’t believe they are completed works, or that they have to play with the cards they started with. They can learn new things and improve their skills. Miller references a study by Carol Dweck showing how people with a growth mindset achieved more in life than those with a fixed mindset.
I’ve met a number of people who are averse to self-help and productivity books. They don’t like being told what to do. They don’t like feeling inadequate with who they are currently. They don’t like the idea of being uncomfortable. Their mindset is fixed.
I choose to believe that I can always get better, that I can always learn something new, and that I can achieve anything I set my mind to. I don’t really care if it’s true or not. The pursuit of being better than yesterday is what gives me motivation for today.
What sort of mindset are you approaching today with? A fixed mindset or a growth mindset? I’ll be here believing I can transform into the best version of myself, and working each day to get there. I hope you’ll join me.
