No one makes anyone else famous anymore. Netflix doesn’t give comedy specials to unknown comedians. Record labels don’t give deals to bands who don’t have groundswell. Even if you get a book deal with a big publishing house, “authors are often unhappy with marketing support or surprised at lack of support,” says Jane Friedman, author of The Business of Being a Writer.
A gatekeeper’s only aim to amplify your current fame for their own profit. Sometimes this can be quite profitable for everyone involved. Sometimes it isn’t.
