Extended periods of meaningful work
“You can’t delve into extended periods of meaningful work if you’re constantly shifting your focus when one of seventeen apps or devices alert you about an incoming message.”
–Michael S. Hyatt, Free to Focus
I’ve been on a project for the past few months that has me on call for my clients, and a group of creators. The nature of being on call is that while there isn’t necessarily work to be done all day long, there are constant interruptions when I try to do other work for extended periods of time.
I’m looking forward to wrapping up this project, to give me more extended periods of meaningful work, as Hyatt describes. I’ve been kicking this idea around with a few advisors of mine, but I think I’m going to take the first extended break of my career to write my second book. Something like six to eight weeks of phone-off writing time.
When I wrote my first book, I did it in the morning hours before work began. This worked for me. But I want my second book to be richer, clearer, and better than my first. I want to see what happens to my writing with protected, extended focus blocks.
