In a creative rut? Empty the dishwasher
It’s not ideal to go straight from a high-stimulation activity into a creative session. Ping-ponging Slack messages, clearing out your inbox, or scrolling on social media are all not conducive to clear-headed creativity.
One thing I like to do to reset my mental state before a creative session are chores. If social media is over-stimulating, emptying the dishwasher is under-stimulating. Using your hands lets your mind reset and think of interesting ideas before you create.
If you keep running into distraction while you create, maybe it’s because your brain is tuned up, ready for high-stimulation activities. Try taking a break to reset before you work on your art.
