You don’t have a brand (…yet)

Yesterday, a friend asked me for advice about starting a new social channel. He was in between a few different content formats, and asked me which one he should choose. If he chose one, then switched to the other, would that be off brand?

Creative people like us are very good at thinking about “brand.” Especially if we’ve worked at agencies, production companies, or directly with clients. But this can get in the way and block us creatively when we think about it too much for ourselves. The reason being, if you’re just starting a social channel, you don’t even have a brand.

This isn’t to say that you don’t have a style, or a niche, or colors, or a logo, or anything like that. That may all be well and good. But if you haven’t created a content that has garnered an audience, you don’t have a brand in the mind of an audience. And you won’t have one until you create content that goes viral, and earns you an audience.

Anyone making content in this post-Covid era knows how important it is to continually test new formats. It’s especially important for people who are starting new social channels. Don’t worry about your brand yet. Try anything that’s interesting to you, and listen to what people respond to.
