This is my 1,000th blog post
Here are four things I’ve learned about creativity since I started my blog in January 2018.
“Just Google it!”
If everyone has access to the same ambiguous, potentially incorrect information, it’s no longer an advantage.
Leave the lightning to the amateurs
“While creativity can seem like magic, like every magic trick there is a method behind it. A timeless creation will not simply appear.”
Moving into abundance
Isn’t creating a beautiful thing? But not to prove an old piano teacher wrong, or to show someone that you’re somebody.
You are your own worst customer
It stands to reason that high expectations reduce the amount of satisfaction we feel in our work.
When creative work isn’t working
Some days, creative work just doesn’t flow. On days like these, you have two options.
The mirage of compromise
As a younger person, I loved compromises. What’s not to love about people agreeing on a plan they can both accept? Why does one person always need to win?
Don’t buy the boat (rent it)
This is what we do with the Creative Consistency Challenge. We essentially “rent” an identity for a short period of time to see how it affects our lives.
Some things only work when humans do them
“The power of real outreach is on the rise. Genuinely targeted, researched and personalized messages coming from a true expert…”
Personal creativity is important
When you create art for yourself, you’re not doing a lot of other things.
Some bets only work out in the long run
Are you really on the wrong path? Or have you just not been on the path long enough?
You can only win what you’re willing to lose
This is a lesson I’ve been learning at the poker table recently.
How to be successful and rich
“If you want to be successful, you only need to do one thing: be proud of your work...”
In defense of the business model canvas
While I don’t believe all business is a zero-sum game, there is credence to the idea that a sale someone else makes is a sale you don’t make, at least in that moment.
One sentence can save a book
I bought a book about the publishing industry. One line, about 90 pages in, might just change everything for the next phase of my career.
Switches and dimmers
Where can I incorporate switches instead of dimmers? How can I be fully present with one thing, and turn the rest off—even for an hour?
How to make artist friends
There are two ingredients necessary for people to become fast friends: a shared goal, and a common language.
I’ve launched my YouTube
I’ve been rethinking my personal content strategy recently. As part of this process, I’ve launched my YouTube channel with four in-depth videos breaking down freelance concepts.
